If you have a two story unit, the method from the first floor to the second floor must be inside the unit. People should not have to go outside if they are getting ready for bed. On a cold and snowy night, it just wouldn't be fun.
i think a ladder inside the house would be a better idea than having a set of stairs out side that way you wont get cold when you decide to go to sleep.
